My Son, You Won’t Go To School This Year

My Son, You Won't Go To School This Year - Read all on This Parenting Thing!

The idea of homeschooling has been in my head and my heart since I know it exists and it’s legal. I wasn’t 100% sure before having you, but I liked the idea of being in charge of your education.

Then, you came into our lives.

I still had this idea: it was just a normal thing to do since you were already staying with me instead of going to kindergarten. However, I was also a bit scared  This fear wasn’t coming from myself, it was from what everybody was saying. Just the fact of being a stay-at-home mom has been the “talk of the town”. People were worried about me: I had to work, I had to earn money, right? But they were even more worried about you:

However, I was also a bit scared  This fear wasn’t coming from myself, it was from what everybody was saying. Just the fact of being a stay-at-home mom has been the “talk of the town”. People were worried about me: I had to work, I had to earn money, right? But they were even more worried about you:

By staying home, you wouldn’t have friends.

By staying home, you wouldn’t learn “to socialize”.

By staying home, you wouldn’t be ready for school…

All these fears disappeared over time. Well, they disappeared for your dad and I… for the rest of the family, that’s another story! I think that these people that love you very much are still wondering how you would be if I had sent you to kindergarten… even just a few days a week.

For your dad and I, we realized it was a great thing that we believed it wasn’t a necessity for you and your brother. And school age was closer than ever and we knew what to do.

Why? Well…

You have your own needs, your own way of learning and that’s what makes who you are. I fear that school is not ready for an extraordinary boy like you.

I also want to be there for you and your thousands of questions!

And I think there’s always more than one way to do things in life. Yes, school is a valid option to learn, but it’s not the only one! As long as you’ll want to stay home, as long as I’ll feel that I can help you discover the world, we’ll continue our adventure!

We’re not alone, you know. Your dad and your brother are with us, but there are also other families like ours! They are always ready to do something with us!

My son, you’ll be 6 years old soon, but you won’t go to school this year. Neither the next one. You have already learned to read, to write and you definitely don’t need me to learn numbers! I see you and your brother: you count how many toys you have, how many crackers I put in your bowls… We discover our province when we travel and we even started to discover the entire country by following grandma’s travels on a map!

You won’t go to school this year, but you are still already learning so much!
